Clinical Outcomes of a Nationwide, Naturalistic E-Cig Trial (CONNECT)

The purpose of this study is to measure changes in smoking behavior during and following sampling of an e-cigarette product. E-cigarettes are classified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a tobacco product, though they contain no tobacco. Unlike regular cigarettes, which are burned (creating smoke that is inhaled), e-cigarettes include a heating element that vaporizes nicotine. E-cigarettes are likely much safer than conventional cigarettes, but they may not be entirely safe. We are testing the effects of one specific ecigarette (NJoy) on naturalistic changes in smoking behavior. Neither the tobacco industry nor any ecigarette manufacturer provides support of any kind to this study. There is no requirement to quit smoking in this study, nor is there any requirement to use e-cigarettes.

CSD190601: A Study to Determine Subject Puffing Patterns of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems in an Ambulatory Setting

This study will be a single-center, controlled, open-label, parallel two-study-group investigation to evaluate the puffing patterns of healthy adult consumers of tobacco products switching from a usual brand (UB) Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) product to one of two different ENDS, Product A with 1.5% nicotine, and Product B with 3.0% nicotine, over a three-week ambulatory period. This study will be conducted in support of a Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) ENDS submission to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP).

Expanding the Click City Tobacco Prevention Program to Include E-cigarettes and Other Novel Tobacco Products

The overarching goal of the proposed Phase II research is to demonstrate the short-term effectiveness of the modification of an existing, effective, computer-based, tobacco prevention program, Click City®: Tobacco, to prevent the initiation of e-cig use among youth. A secondary goal is to modify the program to increase marketability by expanding the range of devices on which the program can be delivered (e.g., tablets to desktops), simplifying the student user interface, and providing more robust teacher/administrator functionality.

Comparative Tobacco Interventions for Individuals With Severe and Persisting Behavioral Health Disorders

The aim of this pilot intervention is to examine the acceptability of a harm reduction intervention approach to tobacco use for individuals with serious behavioral health disorders and its association with a decrease in smoking. The intervention uses a "dynamic" approach to patient choice, allowing participants the option to explore different strategies for harm reduction, while providing support from counselors in the process. Therefore, the investigators have chosen an observational study design in order to document and explore the acceptability and outcomes of the intervention.

JUUL vs. Mod E-cigarette Study

Some smokers who try e-cigarettes transition completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes, but others continue to use both products, or abandon e-cigarettes and return completely to cigarettes. One factor that likely impacts these tobacco use patterns is the e-cigarette device used. The majority of e-cigarettes purchased today are one of two "types:" customizable tanks or pods. These e-cigarette types differ from each other in critical ways, like nicotine delivery and sensory characteristics, that are likely to impact use by influencing the relative reinforcement value of the product. The present study will be a randomized trial investigating the impact of e-cigarette device type on reinforcement value and use among current smokers. Current smokers (n=100) will be randomly assigned to either a control group that does not receive an e-cigarette or one of two e-cigarette types: a customizable tank, or a pod. The impact of device type on relative reinforcement value will be assessed using a choice task. Participants will also take home their assigned e-cigarette for a three-week sampling period. Primary outcomes include relative reinforcement value (choices to smoke in the lab-based choice task), cigarette smoking behavior (cigarettes smoked per day during sampling), and uptake (e-cigarette puffing episodes per day during sampling).

Engaging Sexual and Gender Minority Cigarette Smokers Into Social Media-based Treatment

This research study will evaluate the preliminary efficacy of Pride Posts Plus, a social media-based smoking cessation treatment. A pilot randomized trial (N=120) will compare Pride Posts Plus, which includes a gamification element, to Pride Posts (without gamification) and to a usual care treatment. Participants will be adults who smoke, identify as sexual or gender minorities, and use Facebook. The primary outcome will be biochemically verified 7-day abstinence from smoking at 3 and 6 months. Secondary outcomes will be treatment engagement, a quit attempt (y/n), and thoughts about tobacco abstinence at 3 and 6 mos.

Testing Legally Feasible Options: Study 1

The overall aim of this research is to experimentally evaluate different, legally-viable approaches to reducing the impact of the point-of-sale (POS) retail environment on adolescent tobacco use risk. This study will be investigating the regulations for four classes of tobacco products (cigarettes, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, little cigars/cigarillos). Study 1 (study 1 out of 3 proposed) will examine whether eliminating the sale of flavored tobacco products at POS reduced adolescents' tobacco use risk.

Strategies to Connect Patients at Federally Qualified Health Clinics With Evidence Based Tobacco Cessation Treatment

This trial aims to connect tobacco using patients of Community Health Centers (CHCs) and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) with evidence-based treatment to help them quit. The trial will evaluate multiple strategies, that target both clinics and for patients, to increase the number of patients who enroll in Utah Tobacco Quit Line treatment.
