Recovery - a Collaborative Project

In Norway, official guidelines and policies state that recovery oriented services in the field of mental health and substance abuse services is a desirable goal. This collaborative research project aims to provide in-depth knowledge of how recovery oriented practices and collaboration in the mental health and substance abuse services in the municipality of New Drammen develop over a three-year period. Using qualitative methods, the main aim of the study is to explore what recovery orientation of services in mental health and substance abuse presupposes and involves related to roles, collaboration and knowledge. To explore these issues, service users will be interviewed together with their primary mental health professional. The study will also apply observational fieldwork in order to observe recovery oriented practices between service users and professionals and between professionals. An advisory group consisting of people with background as service users, mental health clinicians and service leaders will contribute throughout the project. .

EEG Monitoring in the Emergency Department

This study seeks to investigate whether drug effects in suspected overdose patients could be identified using the electroencephalogram (EEG). From previous work it is known that different classes of anesthetic drugs have specific "EEG signatures" related to the drug mechanisms. Many of the drugs of abuse that are frequently encountered in overdose patients are similar or identical to anesthetic drugs. The hypothesis for this study is that the EEG could be used to characterize the brain effects of intoxicants using EEG in the ED setting. Such monitoring could one day help clinicians and first responders at the point-of-care make more informed decisions to improve the care of overdose patients.

Enhanced Access to HIV Care for Drug Users in San Juan, Puerto Rico

The overall goal of this project is to implement and evaluate a community-level, structured approach to enhance HIV care access and retention for drug users in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The "Enhanced HIV Care Access and Retention Intervention" will: 1) identify drug users living with HIV who either do not know their HIV status and/or are not engaged in HIV care; 2) provide direct HIV care services through a mobile health van; and 3) support identified HIV-infected drug users with patient navigators to enhance their ability to engage in HIV care and substance abuse treatment, to initiate antiretroviral therapy, and maintain adherence to their treatment regimens. The structural enhanced care approach will be evaluated through a randomized roll-out design, a refinement of the stepped-wedge design. The community-level success of the intervention will be assessed by evaluating virologic suppression (primary biological outcome), increased attendance to HIV care visits, uptake of antiretroviral therapy, adherence to HIV treatment regimens, and decreased substance use (as secondary behavioral outcomes) in an independent cohort of HIV-positive individuals drawn from each of the neighborhoods included in the intervention. The investigators will also evaluate the implementation process and cost of the enhanced care approach including implications for cost-effectiveness, feasibility of expansion, and sustainability.

Integrated BA and HIV RR Counseling for MSM With Stimulant Abuse

This study seeks primarily to test, in a three-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT), the efficacy of Project IMPACT, an intervention that integrates Behavioral Activation (BA) with HIV risk reduction (RR) counseling for HIV-uninfected men who have sex with men (MSM) with stimulant use disorder at risk for HIV via sexual behavior. HIV-uninfected MSM with a diagnosis of stimulant use disorder will be randomized 2:2:1 to three arms: (1) the Project IMPACT intervention, BA-RR counseling, which lasts ten sessions; (2) the time- and intensity-matched control condition, including ten sessions of relaxation therapy with educational support; and (3) the standard of care (SOC) comparison condition, including two equivalent sexual risk-reduction counseling sessions. Participants will be followed for one year post-randomization, with assessments at months four, eight, and 12.
