High-Intensity Parent Intervention Program in Improving Learning and School Functioning in Latino Children With Acute Leukemia or Lymphoblastic Lymphoma

This randomized clinical trial studies how well a high-intensity intervention parenting program works in improving learning and school functioning in Latino children with acute leukemia or lymphoblastic lymphoma. A high-intensity intervention program may help doctors to see whether training parents or caregivers in specific parenting skills and "pro-learning" behaviors will result in better learning and school outcomes for Latino children with acute leukemia or lymphoblastic lymphoma. It is not yet known if a high-intensity intervention program is more beneficial than a standard of care lower intensity parenting intervention.

Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant With Added Sugar and Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Leukemia or Lymphoma

This phase II trial studies how well an umbilical cord blood transplant with added sugar works with chemotherapy and radiation therapy in treating patients with leukemia or lymphoma. Giving chemotherapy and total-body irradiation before a donor umbilical cord blood transplant helps stop the growth of cells in the bone marrow, including normal blood-forming cells (stem cells) and cancer cells. When the healthy stem cells from a donor are infused into the patient they may help the patient's bone marrow make stem cells, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The umbilical cord blood cells will be grown ("expanded") on a special layer of cells collected from the bone marrow of healthy volunteers in a laboratory. A type of sugar will also be added to the cells in the laboratory that may help the transplant to "take" faster.

Itacitinib, Tacrolimus, and Sirolimus for the Prevention of GVHD in Patients With Acute Leukemia, Myelodysplastic Syndrome, or Myelofibrosis Undergoing Reduced Intensity Conditioning Donor Stem Cell Transplantation

This phase IIa trial studies the side effects of itacitinib when given together with standard treatment (tacrolimus and sirolimus), and to see how well it works in preventing graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) in patients with acute leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome or myelofibrosis who are undergoing reduced intensity conditioning donor stem cell transplantation. GVHD is a common complication after donor stem cell transplantation, resulting from donor immune cells recognizing recipients' cells and attacking them. Adding itacitinib to tacrolimus and sirolimus may reduce the risk GVHD and ultimately improve overall outcome and survival after donor stem cell transplantation.

Emotion and Symptom-Focused Engagement Trial for Individuals With Acute Leukemia

The purpose of this study is to find out whether a novel manualized intervention, called Emotion and Symptom-focused Engagement (EASE), that combines psychological support with symptom screening plus triggered referral to early palliative care for symptom control, reduces psychological distress and physical symptom burden in individuals newly diagnosed with acute leukemia. To do this, half of the participants in this study will receive the usual care offered to patients with acute leukemia and half of the participants will receive usual care plus the EASE intervention.

They want to know how many patients get a transplant and why some patients do get a transplant while others do not. Also they want to explore why some patients elect not to undergo stem cell transplantation, when it is recommended by their physicians.

RIC Regimen for Elderly or High Comorbidity Burden Patients Receiving Haplo-HSCT

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) regimen in elderly or high comorbidity burden patients who receive haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT). Haplo-HSCT is an effective treatment option for patients who did not have identical sibling donor (ISD) or unrelated donor (URD). However, post-transplant transplant-related mortality (TRM) is one of the major causes for transplant failure, and the risk of TRM for old patients or those with high comorbidity burden was higher. RIC regimen may decrease the risk of TRM for haplo-HSCT recipients. The study hypothesis: Using RIC haplo-HSCT regimen in elderly patients or those with high comorbidity burden can reduce TRM and improve survival.

Haploidentical Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation for Acute Leukemia

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (Allo-HSCT) is the effective and even the only treatment for hematological malignancies. The "GIAC" protocol established by our center has successfully crossed the HLA barrier in HLA-mismatched/haploidentical HSCT. The protocol entails the following: treating donors with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) to induce donor immune tolerance, intensified immunologic suppression to both promote engraftment and to prevent GVHD, antithymocyte globulin (ATG) was included for the prophylaxis of GVHD and graft rejection, and combination of G-CSF-primed bone marrow harvest (G-BM) and G-CSF-mobilized peripheral blood stem cell harvest (G-PB) as the source of stem cell grafts. But peripheral blood transplantation is still prevalent. Compared with BM, G-PB is more convenient to collect, and the number of T lymphocytes and CD34+ cells is higher. It is reported that G-PB has a higher implantation rate and even a higher disease-free survival rate in sibiling-identical transplantation compared with BM transplantation, whereas there were also reports with different conclusions. This prospective, one-arm clinical cohort study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of haplotype peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) in the treatment of acute leukemia.

Establishing Automatic Method of Counting and Classify Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood Cells

Counting and classification of blood cells in a bone marrow smear and peripheral blood smear are essential to clinical hematology. To this date, this procedure has been carried out in a manual manner in the great majority of clinical settings. There is often inconsistency in the counting result between different operators largely due to its manual nature. There has not been an effective and standard method for blood smear preparation and automatic counting and classification. The recent advent of deep neural network for medical image processing introduced new opportunities for an effective solution of this long-standing problem. Numerous results have been published on the effectiveness of convolutional neural network in clinical image recognition task.
